The stories behind the numbers
US, Canada and France area: compare the definitions first
World Bank data for 2024 put US surface area at about 9.83 million km². The Canada figure used here is about 8.79 million km² of land. These answer different questions: comparing them directly does not establish which country has the larger total area. The indicator matters as much as the number.
According to World Bank data for 2024, what is the approximate total surface area of the United States, including inland water and some coastal waterways?
Answer and explanation: 9.83M km²
About 9,830,000 km². The World Bank’s surface-area indicator includes land, inland water, and some coastal waterways. 2024 is the data reference year.

Answer and explanation
9.83M km²
About 9,830,000 km². The World Bank’s surface-area indicator includes land, inland water, and some coastal waterways. 2024 is the data reference year.
Land area and surface area are different
The US surface-area indicator includes land, inland water and some coastal waterways. Canada’s land-area indicator excludes inland waters such as lakes and rivers, as well as continental-shelf claims and exclusive economic zones. The shared year and unit do not erase this difference. Use the same indicator for both countries before making an area ranking.
France and territory coverage
INSEE’s 2024 publication gives metropolitan France an area of 543,940 km², rounded here to 544,000 km². This includes Corsica and excludes overseas territories, using administrative boundaries as of 1 January 2024. A figure covering a broader definition of France would answer a different question even if its unit were also square kilometres.
A fair comparison
Read the geography label, water coverage, reference year and rounding rule together. Here, 2024 identifies the data or boundary reference, not evidence that a country suddenly changed size. Keep the source’s scope when quoting elsewhere. If you calculate population density, the population and area must describe the same territory; a country name alone does not guarantee that match.
Try the area questions by identifying what each figure includes before choosing a number. The scope is part of the answer.
