How can a global population be estimated?
Countries collect population information through censuses, civil registration and surveys. The UN brings demographic evidence together to estimate populations on a consistent basis. Births, deaths and migration matter when following a country over time. A new census can also improve an earlier estimate; a revision does not mean those people suddenly appeared.
How large is a billion?
One billion equals one thousand million, so 8.2 billion is 8,200 million. Keeping the unit visible helps when comparing figures written in different languages. A total population describes scale, but it does not tell you the ages of the people, how densely they live or how income is distributed.
What should you check before comparing?
Check the reference year, the geographic coverage and the publication edition. A future projection depends on assumptions, while a historical estimate uses evidence about a past population. Neither should be silently substituted for the other. Even a per-person calculation needs a population denominator for the matching place and period.
Remember the full label: about 8.2 billion people, worldwide, in the UN’s 2024 edition for 2024.
